It's Not Just Fashion

Because Friendster is no longer cool and we refuse to tweet, we're making a tumblr. Delve into the terrible combination of Charlie and Marisa's minds that is: It's Not Just Fashion.

The latest ad campaign for Burberry S/S 2010 is out!!!  We LOVE us some Christopher Bailey and Emma Watson.  Such a beautiful line with an amazing twist on the most classic of English brands.  Marisa would even be willing to be in Slytherin house (or worse, Ravenclaw) if it meant getting her hands on that light purple trench.

Ok something that has been bothering us is bloggers who only blog about their ridiculously lavish purchases and only post pictures of themselves each day.  Yet bloggers like, Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes fame and Rumi of Fashion Toast fame have a loyal legion of followers and the adoration of many a fashion editor.  What do you guys think about these bloggers?  Do they deserve praise for simply showing off their good looks, expensive purchases and camera skills or does a fashion blog need something more to truly be unique and entertaining?

We’d love your input!

Hello from Taiwan!  One half (Marisa) of It’s Not Just Fashion has made it out of final exams (barely) alive and is now in Taiwan!  Luckily, she has Internet in her several hotels and has some pockets of time to share some Taiwanese fashion with you, yay!  Right now, I’m up in the mountains of Taiwan, near the Taroko Gorges which are absolutely breathtaking mountains that reach the clouds and are densely covered in greenery, marble boulders and waterfalls/streams.  Yesterday, I went for lunch in the Taroko Gorges at a restaurant run by an aboriginal Taiwanese tribe called, Atayal.  The old women in this tribe have their faces covered in tattoos which they had done at the age of 13.  In the ancient Atayal culture, when women became, cough cough, a woman (usually around 13) they had their face tattooed.  Check it out, and really be glad you aren’t a female member of the Atayal tribe!  Fashion-wise in the mountains, you’re mostly either a monk or dressed in very traditional Chinese style or in hiking gear climbing the trails.  Shops are filled with lots of jade (got a little jade frog necklace yesterday), and lots of beautiful wood carvings.

Will try to continue to update when I get back to the city, Taipei, tomorrow!

Ughhh, Final Exams

Sorry everyone, final exams have been throughly kicking our booties leaving us no time for our precious blog :(  It fills us with sadness but we likely will not be able to post for the next week or some, at least not on a regular basis.  Apologies to all readers, we’re as sad as fans of Christian Lacroix about this.  BUT get excited for some great holiday post soon to come!

xx

Last night’s New York premiere of Twilight: New Moon brought out a slew of unlikely fashion folk to come fete the tween obsession that is Twilight.  Agyness Deyn, Jessica Stam, Rachel Roy and Lydia Hearst were just a few of the fashionistas supporting the film’s premiere.  Ok, we realize the party was also sponsored by D&G, but these people still had to supposedly sit through the entirety of New Moon and deal with the crazed Twilight fans aka “Twihards.”  So this got us thinking, why might members of the fashion industry openly be supportive of a film we would think is beneath them?  Do these fashion heavy-hitters secretly sit around reading Twilight aloud and drooling over pictures of Robert Pattison?  This has actually gotten us quite puzzled.  But then again, maybe we’re overanalyzing this; walking the red carpet at a movie premiere is one thing, the day we see Jessica Stam trying to rip off a lock of R-Patz’s hair, then maybe we’ll believe that even the elite of the fashion industry aren’t immune to the magic that is Twilight.

permalink Usually we’re not a fan of when celebrity magazines do “Who Wore it Better?” (the skinnier person always wins!  It’s just unfair!), but we love this Fabsugar post about Kate Moss and Carine Roitfeld.  We never thought the day would come that someone would out-dress Kate Moss, but Carine has proven worthy of worship yet again.  We remember seeing this pic of Kate a while back and thinking she looked so-so, but mostly uncomfortable and kinda sweaty.  Whereas Carine looks composed and relaxed in what is likely a sticky and stiff dress to wear.  She successfully made this all-leather turtleneck look understated.  While Kate looks like she’s recycling her pleather catwoman costume from a few Halloween’s back, Carine looks fashion-forward and luxurious.

permalink Louise Goldin's latest creations may be for trendy wallet-friendly Topshop, but they are no less avant-garde than her usual couture creations.  The juxtaposition of violent spikes on the quintessential feminine heel- the pump- is a fun play on glamour and punk inspiration.  These are shoes on a mission, shoes with a purpose, shoes that could, well, hurt you.  We would love to see these paired with something ruffled and romantic.  Nothing like opposites that attract to make the most put together of outfits.  We expect to see Kate Lanphear featuring these in an upcoming issue of ELLE; they're just her rock n' roll style.

The superstar powerhouse known as Brangelina are the latest to jump on the celebrity designer bandwagon.  But before you start shaking your head and sighing (à la when Lindsey Lohan came out with her line of leggings), Brad and Angy may actually be onto something.  The extremely attractive duo have teamed up with British luxury goods co., Asprey, to create a line of serpent-inspired jewelry and accessories.  The line, which is titled The Protector, has been in the works for over a year, and the proceeds from all sales will go to charity.  We are very much feeling the thin, dainty serpent rings.  The all gold band with the tiny emreld eyes is sexy, yet subtle; it would make a great pointer finger ring or would work well stacked above a thin gold band.  We are also loving the all black diamond cuff (or ring? it’s kind of unclear from the photo, but we’re hoping cuff) with the piercing green eyes.  This piece would take any outfit to the next level.

permalink We thought it couldn’t be done, and yet the amazing Daphne Guinness has managed to walk the red carpet and party all night in the McQueen alien shoes.  The heiress is known for her risk-taking style, but this just looks downright painful.  10 bucks says she took those babies off as soon as she scooted away from the cameras.  Either way, we commend her and her bold style.  Only a true fashion-lover would risk never being able to walk again if it meant being the first to clomp down the red carpet in these coveted works of art.
